A Weekend on The Cooper

Long hot days on the Cooper brought excellent race results from Haddon Township crews this weekend as the Mercury tipped 88 degrees, but water conditioned boasted nothing more than 5-7 mph gusts.

Claudia Loeber and Greg Cuneo both finished 2nd in the Varsity single and the Women's Varsity quad finally broke through with a fiesty performance battling back from a late race deficit to finish 3rd and best Montclaire by just under 5 seconds at the New Jersey State Championships on Saturday.

The Hawks returned to the Cooper River on Sunday for the delightfully well oiled Cooper Cup and had some of the best results in its history, winning 9 medals in the process.  Greg Cuneo had no easy task and had to row hard in the Heat to finish 3rd and qualify in the last spot, only to claw his way into the lead group and finish 3rd overall in the Final winning him a bronze medal in the Men's Varsity 1x.  Both the Women's Novice 4x, and Women's JV A 4x, won their events with an impressive margin.  The Women's Novice 4x clocked a 8:17.07 giving them the fastest time of their event and the Women's JV 4x clocked a 7:54.8 just under 1.5 seconds off the fastest time of their event, clocked by Sacred Heart.

All boats raced well both days and the majority of the crews rowed their best performance of the year today.  HT will travel to Philadelphia next weekend for the City Championships.

The Brady's Head To Philly

The Novice women's 4x will be travelling to Philadelphia today to get an early look at their competition.  They will be practicing the Novice women from Notre Dame Academy, Friends Select, Conestoga and Bachelors Barge Club over several 2k pieces.  This will be an excellent opporutnity for the ladies to get some racing experience against some exceptional crews.

The JV 4x Gets It's Groove Back

Our women's JV 4x of Francesca Loeber, Taylor Harper, Erika Harter, and Emily Davis got a bit of groove back this weekend at the ISA sculling Sprints, finishing just seconds from the Silver Medalists.  After only a week in the boat Taylor has done a fantastic job converting to sculling, and the boat is faster because of her energy and efforts.  Francesca Loeber has also given a new spark to the boat and hopefully they will have some inertia going into this weekends double header against some challenging crews.

Cooper Cup

10 Boats will compete for medals at the Cooper Cup this Sunday at home sweet home.  The men's 1x, Ltwt women's 4+, and Ltwt Boys 4+ will all have heats and finals.  Everyone else will just have a final.

Stotesbury

A note on Stotes...

Stotesbury, our biggest regatta, located in Philadelphia is fast approaching and I wanted to get a little info out about the regatta.

  • There are no JV 1x's.
  • You are permitted to only enter one boat per event.
  • You are not permitted to race twice.
  • As of today they have entered a girls Freshman 4x.
  • Usually the heat format is set up as a time trial, heat, semi, and final for the biggest events.
  • Some crews will only race one day while others may race every day depending on the size of the event.
  • There are generally a lot of lightweight 4's men and women.
Note.  Not everyone will race at Stotes.  The fastest boats in each event will go.  We are doing our absolute best to make sure that everyone races this season, and we have entered 8 and 9 entries for the New Jersey State Champs and the Cooper Cup.

Monday, April 6, 2009

Perfect weather, calm conditions and a double rainbow derigging party paved the way towards taking a big step forward for HT Crew this weekend. All boats dramatically improved and will have some great momentum and positive energy going into the next two weeks of training, which will be critical for success in late April and early May. All boats improved, but it was the Novice women's 4x, lwt men's 4+, and lwt women's 4+ that get the gold star this week.

The novice women went from last in Flick #3 to 2nd yesterday. They led most of the second half of the race only to get nipped by a talented Conestoga crew in the last 20 strokes. They will be especially determined over the next two weeks to improve in the hopes of leaving Stoga on the short side of the finish line the next time they meet.

The light men's four battled Moorestown and Radnor all the way down the course and found the extra effort in the final 20 strokes to finish 2nd in their heat and post one of the top 5 times of their event. They have been a crew that has rowed pretty well from the start and are now beginning to find a new intensity. If they bring the same attitude to practice for the next two weeks, the skies the limit...

The lightweight women have had an uphill battle since hopping into the boat last month, but seem to have turned a corner yesterday with an incredible performance. They were rowing even with Moorestown and Agnes Irwin for the early part of the race and pushed hard to finish third in their heat, a dramatic improvement over their first two outings this year. They took the initiative to improve their own start this week and Anna, their coxswain, came up with a great race plan that contributed to their turn around performance. They now have some good momentum and good mojo to bring to the next week of practice.

One side note; our Novice men's 4+ was well on their way to another successful performance before stroke seat, Ryan Clark caught a crab that ejected him from the boat and into the bosom of the Schuylkill River. Fortunately, he was not injured and was able to quickly swim back to the boat and finish the race.

Our Varsity women's 1x and Novice 2x braved their way through their first regatta in challenging conditions and represented their team well.

All in all it was a good weekend for the entire team and should provide some good fuel for the next two weeks of training; perhaps the most important of our outdoor season. It will be critical that we all work together to make sure that the next two weeks are productive and consistent. Parents please adhere to the practice policies and schedule appointments around practice times. I have been trying my best to schedule things as far in advance as possible but injuries, boat usage, and equipment problems have all reeked havoc on our best laid plans. We will continue to do all we can to make the schedules in advance and keep you updated on changes. Please check back to this site frequently this week, as we will have more information on spring break, traveling to Mercer for the ISA Sculling Championships and practice times.

Flick #4

Flick #4 is upon us and the team is in full prep mode. We have been using these races as tune ups for the bigger races. They have been a great tool to use to get lineups, racing starts, and racing strategies hammered down and ironed out. Below are a listing of events we are entered in and some general rules and regulations. There are some changes this week, including weigh ins for lightweights beginning at 8AM at St. Joe's Boathouse. Thanks again to all of the parents that have volunteered, fundraised, set up and managed the tent, etc.  The following are events we are entered and will compete in barring illnesses;

  • Event #47 (3rd event of the day) Girls Novice 2x; 9:10 am, Lane 2, White/orange boat
  • Event #42 (9th event of the day) Girls Novice 4x; 9:40 am, Lane 6, White boat blue deck
  • Event #38 (12th event of the day) Girls Ltwt 4+; 10:00 am, Lane 2, White boat
  • Event #41 (18th of the day) Girls Varsity 1x; 10:25 am, Lane 1, White/light blue boat
  • Event #44 (32nd event of the day) Girls JV4x; 12:30 PM HEAD RACE STYLE 3 HT Boats   -HT A Bow #79, Yellow Boat Red Oars; Starting 8th
-HT C Bow #82, White Boat; CRC Oars; Starting 11th
-HT B Bow #83, White/Blue Boat; CRC Oars; Starting 12th
  • Event #9 (43rd event of the day) Boys Novice 4+; 2:15 pm, Lane 3, White Boat
  • Event #15 (47th event of the day) Boys JV 1x; 2:35 pm, Lane 3, White/blue Boat
  • Event #13 (54th event of the day) Boys Ltwt 4+; 3:10pm, Lane 3, White Boat

Crews to watch for this week will be the Girls V1x and Girls Nov. 2x who will race for the first time in their respective boats.

Unfortunately, due to the high number of entries in the JV girls 4x, they will run this race Head Race style.  This means they will line up the boats and race down the course one at a time, recording their overall time.  Boats will most likely take a running start and row as hard as they can over the standard 2000-m course.  It is a certainly less entertaining way to run the race, as no one will know who wins until after the results are posted.   Please note some of the rule changes this week listed below:

  • Coaches meeting 7:30AM upstairs in Gillin Boathouse.
  • Referee's meeting 8:00AM upstairs in Gillin Boathouse.
  • Races start at 9:00AM; see www.phillyflicks.com for race schedule.
  • Weigh-in will be held at 8:00 AM at two locations: 1- St. Joe's Prep and 2- Vesper Boat Club.  There will be no afternoon weigh-in.
  • If you are providing a launch, please make sure it gets to the ST. Joe's Prep dock by 7:30.  Also, you must have someone pick up the launch at the end of the regatta.
  • Shuttle buses will be running this weekend.
  • Parking will be available in Fairmount Park for $10.00.
  • No overnight trailer parking in the St. Joe's Prep/Canoe Club parking.  Bring your trailers in on Sunday morning.
  • Parking passes will be collected.  No admittance onto Kelly Drive will be permitted without a pass.
  • A car or truck towing a chuck-wagon (small food trailer) must provide 2 passes as it takes up two parking spaces.
  • Cars must park diagonally on Kelly Drive.
  • Boat trailers and Team buses DO NOT need to provide parking passes to gain access to the Drive.
  • The parking police at the entrance of Kelly Drive will have a list of guest crews.  They will allow only the parent booster vehicles of those crews to enter (i.e. chuck wagons etc.).
  • We're encouraging everyone to use re-usable water bottles and water coolers in place of individual plastic bottles water bottles to reduce the amount of waste we're producing.

Schedule Through April 26th

The schedule through April 26th is located here. Please note that we are on the verge of spring break and it will be an all day affair (check the schedules). Additionally, do to a significant number of tardy arrivals at the 6 AM Saturday practice, we have decided to move practice back to the normal 9-11am time slot for all athletes, if any athlete is late to that practice, corrective action will need to be taken.

Additionally, please make sure that all athletes are in attendance to the unloading "party" after every regatta. We frequently only have 15-20 minutes to unload all of our equipment before the boathouse closes so we need all the hands on the team. You must consult me with a conflict otherwise, please show up.
