Happy Holidays

I hope everyone has gotten an opportunity to get out and play in the snow. I wanted to take a minute to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday and give you a heads up on practice times and scheduling. Of course, as always, this schedule is subject to change, but we will do our best to make sure we try to minimize these occurances as much as possible and communicate through this sight when we must make changes.

The official start of practice is Saturday, January 9th and will happen at the COOPER RIVER BOATHOSUE barring inclement weather. Until March 1st, it will be rare that we have practices there, however our first practice will be a run test around the river loop so we will need the facilities of the park. Practice is from 10-12pm and will be held outside so dress appropriately.

Beginning January 11th, practice will commence in our new rowing room! On the week of January 11th all Novices will practice at 3:15 and Varsity will practice at 5:15. That will continue for two weeks, through January 22nd. As most of you know, we will only be practicing 5 days a week in January (Mon-Fri). Beginning January 25th, practices will switch to men/women instead of Varsity/Novice. From January 25th-Feb 5th Women will practice at 3:15 and Men will practice at 5:15. Practices will flip flop in a bi weekly fashion in this way until the end of February. Once we get back on the water (hopefully on March 1st) we will again return to a novice/varsity practice schedule, beginning with Novices having the first two weeks in March at 3:15. This will continue at least through Flick #2 (March 21st). We hope by mixing the Novices in with the Varsity practices relatively quickly that they will be able to learn from their work ethic, technique and attitude.

Similar to last year we will be having a 3 mile run test with Conestoga (and possibly others) sometime in mid-February in Philadelphia on a Saturday. This is an incredibly fun and competitive event and looks as though it will be much bigger this year. We are currently trying to hammer out a final date.

If you are new to the program and unfamiliar with our rules and regulations we encourage you to look over them here.

Spring Registration

I hope all have had a happy and healthy Thanksgiving holiday and wish you the best of Merry Holidays to come. As many of you may know, spring registration is in full swing. If you haven't done so yet, please mail or hand deliver your registration packets to Mrs. King by this Saturday, December 19th. Any packets received after this date will be charged a late fee and no registration will be accepted after the first day of practice on January 9th. If there are any prohibitive issues outside an athletes desire to row such as cost, please contact Mrs. King as soon as possible.

I am very excited to get started again this spring. As I have mentioned countless times on the water, I am sure we are on the cusp of something very special in our program. I have been incredibly proud of how hard the team, the board, and the parents have worked this year and I am positive we are poised to have a fantastic spring season and beyond with continued hard work.
If you can tell from the "weekly quote" portion of this website that hasn't changed in months, one of my favorite quotes of all time is "If you want to make your dreams come true, wake up" but truly, achieving your goals takes so much more than simply waking up. Understanding your ambition and having the will to attack that goal with a daily commitment is a powerful lesson and hopefully we are teaching our athletes to take that lesson and apply it to every avenue of life. Ultimately, above all else, that is the truest merit of our challenging sport.

Of course, there is a right way and a wrong way to do everything and oftentimes doing things the right way requires so much more patience, determination, and commitment. I am proud that, to date, this program has done things the right way; in fundraising, organized governance and in training. Dollar by dollar, minute by tiring minute I'm sure with continued energy we will continue to build a program we can all be proud of. One of my favorite rowing authors, Brad Lewis said it best when talking about building a roof: "This is your first roof, and I want you to remember two things. Do it right, and finish it. Very simple-do it right, and finish it. If it takes you a month, then take a month. You can't quit, and you can't do it wrong. Get a payday out of this roof or it'll haunt you...The payday I had earned was spent long ago. More important, I had done it right, and I had finished it. The same is true for my life as a sculler."

We still have a lot of work ahead of us, but the greatest thing about working hard and staying committed is that the more you practice it the better you are at weathering the storms and maintaining focus when things get tough. We may only be beginning our new journey as a club and have a long road ahead, but I am so happy to take a minute now to offer some congratulations.

I'm looking forward to getting scores from the Captain's practice this week and can't wait to get into our new erg room this winter! I hope all of you are resting and recharging for an exciting spring season!

HT Winds Down In Philadelphia

The HT Crew Club finished its' fall season today at the Bill Braxton Regatta in Philadelphia PA. HT raced 35 athletes, 6 quads, 2 fours and one HS 2x today; the largest group it has taken to race this fall; on a sunny, perfect day on the Schuylkill River. All Novice got an opportunity to stretch their water wings, some for the first time and all peformed admirably. Racing against Varsity athletes, our large novice group got a great opportunity to get a preview of spring racing today in this; their first 1500-m sprint race. All boats represented the good name of the club well but the highlight of the day was the successfull performance of the High School Men's 2x of Quinn Fitzpatrick and Greg Cuneo who jumped out to an early lead on Bachelors Barge club and held it throughout the course to win; with a 5 second margin to spare. HT's Varsity Women's Quads faced some of the toughest competition they've seen all year, racing hard and finishing 3rd, 5th and 3rd in their respective flights.

HT members had a busy weekend to close their fall season racing at the Braxton Regatta today and the Frostbite Regatta on the Cooper River yesterday. HT's women proved just how much depth they have by finishing 1st, 3rd and 5th in the Varsity Quad Event. HT's top quad of Julie Cippon, Emily Gartland, Emily Davis and Tori King defeated home town rival the South Jersey Rowing club to claim the gold hardware. HT's Greg Cuneo also raced to a sizable lead early in the race to win his Open 2x event.

Rowers will now have an opportunity to rest their tired legs, overcome any nagging illnesses and mentally recharge before returning to organized practices in January.

Rowers should remember that they should report to the boathouse at 3 15 PM tomorrow for boat rigging. Captains; Emily Davis, Emily Gartland, Tori King, Quinn Fitzpatrick and Greg Cuneo should work together to make sure all of their teammates are aware of their responsibility to attend this rigging session. With a large group armed with 7/16 and 10 mm wrenches, this task should take less than 1 hour.

Friday, November 6, 2009

I hope practices have been going well. I have unfortunately gotten strep throat and am still pretty sick, so, I will most likely not be back to practice until Monday at the earliest. The following are the boatings for next weekend. We are still working on finding one boat for Saturday and get confirmation for Sunday boats; so some things may be subject to change, parents please, talk to your children about which boat he/she has been rowing in and will likely row in next weekend.

Frostbite on the Cooper will have only Varsity Boats Racing due to shell restrictions. All Varsity Boats have been entered including 3 x Varsity Girls Quads and 2 Varsity Boys 4+'s, we have attempted to make a late entry for Greg Cuneo in the Open Double so he should expect to race. Race schedule is located here. Some novice subsitution may be necessary due to illness.

Braxton Regatta. We will race the following boats:
2xNovice Boys quads-(listed as Men'sVarsity HS 4x on the schedule)
1xNovice Girls Quad-(listed as women's Varsity HS 4x on the schedule)
3xVarsity Quads-(listed as women's Varsity HS 4x on the schedule)
1xVarsity Boys 2x (Listed as Men's Varsity HS 2x)
2xVarsity Boys 4+ (listed as Men's Varsity HS 4+)
Subject to change due to illness or injury.

Final Note. Including myself there are a lot of people on the team and in your school currently ill. Although attendance at practice is very important, it is not in spite of your health. If you are having any serious flu like symptoms, please take the time to completely recover before returning to practice. It is in your best interest and that of your teammates.

We will have more information on optional winter workouts and the start of the spring season in early January in a few days.

A Note on "Conflicts"

Parents and athletes please do your best to be responsible with scheduling other commitments during practice time. Looking over the calender for the next two weeks we have over 20 conflicts including marching band, family commitments and anything else. These are commitments that, if marked on the calender we can plan for and around, and we have designed a system to make them as minimally disruptive to practice as possible. However, we simply cannot continue to accomodate the growing number of "very important" things that continues to plague our participation at practice. Commiting to something as challenging as being on a rowing team means that you sometimes have to make sacrifices over things that you want and feel are important to you. But when deciding to come to me with conflicts please ask yourself if this is a nice thing for you to have or is essential for you to have. Tutoring for a student that is struggling in class may be a good example of something that is essential and potentially unplanned for. Even with something like tutoring an athlete is still expected to plan and organize their schedule so we can plan appropriately.

Our successes thus far this year are because, as a group, we have made the serious commitment to the sport and followed through in our actions. In doing so, we are committing to teaching life skills such as; organization, goal-setting, responsibility, accountability and commitment that will help give our student/athletes tools that will better prepare them for college and beyond.

HT Comes Back to Philly in Style

After months of preperation and hard work, the HT Crew Club returned to Philly this weekend to participate in its first Head Race since I was hired. Although our practice on Friday was not our best, I think it was very important to getting the nervous energy out of everyone's system and have the kids become more familiar with the regatta course. Bow people and coxswains were able to get a dry run on the course from the comfort of a borrowed Vesper launch before attacking the course in shells at practice and racing on Saturday and Sunday. Crews came to St. Joe's boathouse yesterday with a new focus; relaxed, but attentive and serious. The results proved their new resolve, finishing 1st, 10th, and 15th in the women's open junior quad event and 13th out of 23 in the men's open 4+ event. A special congratulations to Angelie Romano, Tori King, Kelsey McSorley and Amanda Fry who all steered well on a challenging course. The women's top quad of Sophomore, Julie Cippon, Junior Emily Gartland, Senior Emily Davis, and Junior Tori King bested Episcopal, Conestoga, and South Jersey to win this event by over 5 seconds. All boats performed adrmirably yesterday and the level of growth, maturity and leadership on the team far surpasses any performance we've had at previous regattas.

The busy weekend for the Haddon Township Crew Club continued today at the Row for the Cure Regatta which also took place in Philadelphia. Despite some disruption and distraction from inconsistent regatta officials, HT performed equally well today, finishing 1st and 3rd in the Women's 4x, 5th in a very competive Junior 1x event, and 2nd in the Boys 4+. The quad of Julie Cippon, Emily Gartland, Jill Krieger and Tori King posted the fastest time for any women's quad of the day. A special congratulations to our novices Abby, Courtney, and Salena, who competed in their first ever regatta!

HT will roll on this week and practice times will again switch. The novice/varsity men's practices will return to 3:15-5:15 and the Varsity women will return to 5:15 practice. We will have all varsity boats at the LATE (5:15) practice this week on Tuesday and Friday and lift at the school on our regular days, Wednesday and Saturday.

Although this was certainly an incredible weekend for the club, all crews will have their hands full in two weeks at the significantly more competitive, Head of the Schuylkill so we are looking forward to a solid two weeks of practice in preperation. Note to parents: we will race on Saturday only at the Head of the Schuylkill. If possible I would again like to get on the river on the Friday before the regatta.

Reminder: All crews will have the day off tomorrow. For any individuals who did not race on Saturday and Sunday, I encourage you to do a 40 min run, erg, or body circuit.

Practice Monday and Next Weekend.

Because of the half day on Monday, practices will be at 1:15-3:15. Varsity should all be at the early (1:15) practice. The following are the entries for the Row for the Cure. I tried to enter as many boats as I thought could safely get down the course and we wanted to give some of the novices an opportunity to race but unfortunately we could not boat everyone. Of course you are still encouraged to donate to this great cause here. Additionally, for those of you participating in this event, please work to get your family and friends to donate money as well. Get information on how to become a fundraiser here.

Event 12: Mens HS 4+
Quinn Fitzpatrick, Nelson Remetz, Ryan Clark, Bill Harte, Courtney Quinn (cox)

Event 24: Womens HS 4x
Julie Cippon, Emily Gartland, Jillian Krieger, Victoria King

Emily Davis, Salena Silvaria, Abby Dugan, Kelsey McSorley

Event 36: Mens HS 1x
Greg Cuneo

For next weekend we will need to have the trailer in Philly by 2:30 PM on Friday and we will have to leave it there until after the race on Sunday. Practice for the Varsity will be in Philly on Friday, novices are tentatively scheduled for practice on Friday with Jenne and will have off on Saturday. You are certainly encouraged to attend the Navy Day Regatta to cheer on your teammates. The entire team will have off on practice the following Monday. We will need to return to the boathouse and rig on Sunday.

The schedule for Navy Day is now up here.

The prelim. schedule for the Row for the Cure is here.

The lifts are:
1. Dead Lift/Lat Row
2. Bench Press/Wrist Curls
3. Squat/Tri Extensions
4. Lunges/Curls
5. Twisting Core/hanging leg raises
6. Back extensions/Lateral leg raises

The course map for Navy Day and the Row for the Cure are here. Bow people you need to know this course better than the Geese that live there. PARENTS; unfortunately, this course is not particularly viewer friendly. The best place to see your kids race and get pictures will probably be at the finish line on the West River Drive Side of the river (opposite boathouse row) after Girard avenue bridge. In the best interest of race focus and parental safety we ask that; if it is necessary to meet with your child, that you do so away from the trailer and prior to 2 hours before their scheduled race time.

Rules for the regatta are here.

Head of the Schuylkill and beyond...

As you all know, racing season is rapidly approaching and I wanted to take a moment to go over some of the things you can expect for the fall.

Practice on Monday will be from 10am-12pm. I have instructed any students who may have a potential conflict with this to contact me immediately; because of the late notice it would be excused, none have contacted me.

Reminder that practice times will change this week. The early (3:15) group will switch with the late (5:15) group for the next two weeks. We will continue on in this way; switching every 2 weeks for the remainder of the fall. Please start to bring extra clothing; especially in the late group, practices are starting to get a little chilly. Again, we encourage you to purchase clothing of synthetic or performance wool material. Cotton gets cold, heavy, and uncomfortable when it gets wet and we encourage you to replace it with more athletic garments.

I would like to host practice in Philadelphia on October 9th and October 23rd this fall to help students get more acquainted with the regatta course, please start thinking about arranging rides. Depending on their development, novices may or may not be required to attend these practices.

Update on Regatta Schedule. Because of logistical restraints and our sincere desire to compete in the Row for the Cure event on October 11th in Philadelphia we will no longer be attending the Head of the Housatonic in Connecticut. We have replaced that regatta with the Navy Day Regatta on October 10th in Philadelphia. Additionally, the Frostbite regatta will now be held on the Cooper River in New Jersey, not in Philadelphia, that regatta date will remain the same.

This week we will be going to the school on Wednesday and Saturday to lift and run. Please come equipped with running shoes and eager to learn. Depending on how busy the weight room is, we may need to change the Wednesday scheduling.

Some people are still not in compliance with school regulations regarding physicals. Please review the email below.

Additionally, this week I would like to try to have all Varsity athletes (everyone but novices) attend the early session on Tuesday and Friday for pieces as a team. I think this will help make practices more competitive, and I can be of additional help in instructing the novices in the late group. Novices only will have the late practice on those days. If there are serious conflicts with this late schedule change, please let me know and we can make accomodations.

As you may or not have seen, we have had several nice visits from College rowing coaches already this fall. Brianna Kearney from Barry University in Florida and Rebecca Smith (a former athlete of mine at Vesper) from Bucknell in Lewiston PA. The program has begun to generate a lot more interest and we hope this will continue throughout the fall. Any Senior athletes who have a sincere desire to compete at the collegiate level next year should contact me and we can help facilitate more of these meetings and work to get your name out there.

Finally, the coaching staff asks that all novice parents please review the Haddon Township Code of Conduct and Team Rules (Specifically for Parents) located here . These rules are in place to ensure your child is treated fairly, that we are insuring the safety and security of the boathouse, and time management.
Dear Parents and Rowers:
The following students are not in compliance with the HTCrew and HTHS regulations for participation in athletic activities because of missing medical documentation. Please obtain the needed forms and get them to Mrs. McCutcheon, school nurse, as soon as possible to continue participating in the fall season.

The following rowers need to have physicals on file with the nurse:

Chris Ashmen, Emily Davis, Emily Donovan, Matt Glace, Gabrielle Kraus, Jill Krieger, Kelsey McSorley, Sam Morrison, Courtney Quinn, Angeli Romano

These rowers have had a physical within the past year, but need to file re-certification forms with the nurse:
Greg Cuneo, Quinn Fitzpatrick, Emily Gartland, Nick Herceg, Jim Howley, Eric Monzo, Nelson Remetz

These rowers need to take the online baseline-concussion test. This can be done at any time. Go to www.impacttestonline.com/schools and simply follow the directions. Make sure it is saved so that it can be recorded.

Julie Cippon, Greg Cuneo, Emily Davis, Emily Donovan, Abby Dugan, Nick Herceg, Jim Howley, Tori King, Gabrielle Kraus, Francesca Loeber, Caley O'Brien, Courtney Quinn, Angeli Romano, Salena Silvaria, Evan Taylor

Clarification

Sorry for the confusion. Definition: Scott's dictionary defines

Varsity Athletes as; athletes who are not novices (see also novices).

Novices: Athletes who have not completed a single season with Haddon Township.

Practices are at 3:15 and 5:15 per the schedule below. Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Friday, September 11, 2009

Schedule for the first two weeks

All novices and the Varsity men will practice at the 3:15 pm practice for the first 2 weeks of practice. Going forward, practices will be switched at a bi-weekly interval so novices and the varsity men will have the 5:15 pm practice time starting Sept 28.

Best,

Scott

Tentative Dates For Learn To Row

The following tentative dates are for the Haddon Township Learn To Row Program:

July 1
August 21st

Stotes

The team travelled to the Stotesbury Regatta this weekend to participate in the Largest Scholastic Regatta in the World.  Because of certain circumstances all boats raced up and found the toughest competition short of the USRowing National Championships in Cincinnatti.  Crews from all over the country, and in fact a few from all over the world participated in this regatta and it was rumoured that there were over 850 boats entered for the event. Haddon Township athletes found the going rough but, for the most part,  outperformed their team age and experience level.

The Varsity quad of Mairead Mahoney, Claudia Loeber, Caley O'Brien, and Tori King raced well to finish 8th in their time trial and just miss the grand final by less than a boat length, finishing 4th to Our Lady Mercy in their semifinal; a boat that placed 3rd overall in the regatta.  Hopefully this has given the girls a different perspective on what it takes to medal at an event like this.  They are already outperforming their erg score with their technical ability, and mental toughness, with an extra year of training there is no doubt in my mind we can compete with the top boats at that level.

Our Varsity 1x, Greg Cuneo finished 3rd in his final by a microscope's margin.  He raced incredibly tough in an incredibly tough event but got nipped by a late charge from an outside lane.  Greg has had an incredible season this year winning the City Championships, 2 Manny Flicks, and placing in the top three at the Cooper Cup and NJ State Regatta in the Varsity Single.  With a little more training, a little more size and strength, and a little more experience he will have a bright future in the sport.

Our Freshman 4x made the final by winning their time trial but made some Freshman mistakes to finish out of the medals.  Although they had a rough final yesterday they raced a couragous race unafraid of making mistakes, which is what it takes to win at this level, but it didn't go their way.  They have had an incredible season and hopefully this will give their Summer, Fall, and Winter Training some fire to come back and win next year as JV and Varsity athletes.  If they keep training, they could be the group in the next 3 years that helps us win the Varisty Women's 4x at Stotes and perhaps, earn a trip to England to compete at Royal Henley.

All boats have had a great season and I can't express how proud I am of all of the hard work and great improvements all boats have made this year.  I hope everyone sees this as just a stepping stone towards bigger and brighter things.  We have taken on some ambitious tasks this year and we have accomplished an incredible amount.  With the continued efforts of our amazing board; including our star fundraiser, Mary Ellen Cuneo, and an active and energized base of parents, we can continue on our path to reaching our potential as a club.  The greatest thing about the sport and the team is, that it has a habit of bringing everyone together in a common goal.  We truely can't do it without you... the entire parent base, our gracious sponsors, our community, and of course, our amazing athletes.

Thursday, May 14, 2009

I will have to attend the coaches meeting and registration from 3-6:30 today in Philadelphia so will not be at practice.  If you need anything please call my cell.  Weigh ins are tomorrow from 7-10.  Be at the regatta course at least 2 hours before your race and get your boats rigged as soon as you get there.  Hannah, Anna, Greg, and Quinn are in charge of making sure all of the equipment gets on the trailer.  Please make sure you have all of your yoga money together and give it to Rob or Stevie.

The Bulk of the Novs Close Out the Season At Robert White

The Schuylkill River huffed and puffed and blew rough conditions for the young group of oarspeople this weekend but all boats raced with the determination and energy they have brought throughout the entire season.  Although all boats had difficulty handling the rough water the novice group peformed well and their hard work has been evident in their stellar results this year.  In less than 5 short months this group has evolved and improved at a fantastic rate and we can't wait to have them as Varsity athletes next year.

The Freshman Girls 4x have the good fortune of racing at the Stotesbury Regatta this year in its inagural event and will return to practice on Tuesday with some fire and energy.  They have a short week from Tuesday to Thursday to prepare for Friday's time trial which will take place at 10:16 am.

Trailer Unloading

This weekend's racing ends early; 2:36 PM is our last race so we will plan on coming back to the boathouse, unloading and rigging the boats.  Considering we will only be travelling with 4 boats, things should go pretty fast.  The reported weather for the next few days is lots of rain and Sunday could be very windy with a chance of thunder storms.  Plan on wearing wet weather gear and stay tuned to the blog for updates on schedule changes, cancellations, etc.  We will post everything here first before going to emails.

Technical Focus

Continuing with our technical theme this week. Here is another great video of some great, slow motion, rowing. For the remainder of the week we have to find that scooping, patient, subtle, motion with the hands at the catch and a quick, connected drive of the first 6 inches. There is too much stop and plop, too many hard hands and quick motions in the boat the don't equate to boat speed. Keep the motions slow and controlled in the boat to make the boat go fast. Jumping around in the compartment gives the illusion of speed but the boats not going anywhere and you are working too hard for moderate speed. Be smarter racers and let's start making it easier on ourselves by rowing a little more technically efficient.

A Soggy Day With Sunny Results!

HT Crew Club travelled to Philadelphia today for a soggy outing at the Philadelphia City Championships.  Despite the rain, chilly conditions, multiple hot seating, Coxswain Switching, and nearly killing their coach on a bicycle as he road full speed down Kelly Drive with eight sculling oars swaying side to side, HT was proud to graduate 6 of its 11 entrants to the grand finals.  The 5 boats that did not qualify for the final all came off the water feeling as if it was their best race to date and certainly a day all boats can be proud of.

Congratulations to Greg Cuneo who won his race to become the Philadelphia City Champion in a time of 5:44, 6 seconds ahead of his next rival.

Congratulations also go to the Novice Women's Quad of: Julie Cippon, Jillian Krieger, Maura Mahoney, and Abbi Basso, who won a barn burner against Notre Dame academy in 5:54,  (although the time is posted incorrectly online).  Unfortunately their celebration was cut short in order to assist their Junior Varsity Teammates in getting to the start line on time, but it was a performance they should be proud of.  They will be looking forward to renewing their newly formed rivalry with Notre Dame Next Weekend at the Robert White regatta.

Congratulations to the Women's JV 4x who raced hard to finish 4th in their final behind, Conestoga, Baldwin and winners, Springside.  They raced well in a very tough field.

Congratulations to the Novice Boys 4+ who overcame a lot of adversity at the start to finish just out of the medals in 4th place.  They did a great job battling back and almost performed the miracle.  Fortunately, they will have an opportunity to set things straight at the Doctor Robert White Regatta Next Weekend.

Congratulations to Cluadia Loeber for finishing 4th in the Women's Varsity 1x.  She battled Mollie Cusack from Upper Dublin most of the way down the course before conceding the victory in the final 500-m, a boat she lost to in Manny Flick 4 by nearly 40 seconds.

Congratulations to the Novice women's double for a good race against Sacred Heart.

Congratulations to the JV Boys 2x and Dan Bowen in the JV 1x, who both markidly improved this week.

It was a good team performance today and it is incredible how far this group has come.  It is truely thrilling to see athletes supporting each other, being good teammates, helping with shoes, oars, boats, etc, cheering for each other, hot seating, coxswain switching, etc.  We have also come a long way to become more organized at Regattas, better prepared with a race plan, more knowledgable about race rules and regulations, and better at communicating goals and the steps it takes to achieve them.  I hope the group feels as if this is has been an incredible first step towards learning what it takes to compete in this fantaststic sport.  It is a challenging sport, but learning to face and overcome difficult challenges is an incredible lesson to learn.

A special thanks to Jeff King for waking up so early on a Sunday morning and dedicating an entire soggy day to this affair.  Of course thanks also to all of the parents who braved the wet weather to cheer every boat down the river, provide food and a comfortable, dry place to stay between races.  I hope you know almost all of the boats always take a big move at the tent to give you something to cheer about.

Trailer loading this week will happen tomorrow afternoon after school.  3:15, unload, rig, and go home.  We will not have practice tomorrow.

A Weekend on The Cooper

Long hot days on the Cooper brought excellent race results from Haddon Township crews this weekend as the Mercury tipped 88 degrees, but water conditioned boasted nothing more than 5-7 mph gusts.

Claudia Loeber and Greg Cuneo both finished 2nd in the Varsity single and the Women's Varsity quad finally broke through with a fiesty performance battling back from a late race deficit to finish 3rd and best Montclaire by just under 5 seconds at the New Jersey State Championships on Saturday.

The Hawks returned to the Cooper River on Sunday for the delightfully well oiled Cooper Cup and had some of the best results in its history, winning 9 medals in the process.  Greg Cuneo had no easy task and had to row hard in the Heat to finish 3rd and qualify in the last spot, only to claw his way into the lead group and finish 3rd overall in the Final winning him a bronze medal in the Men's Varsity 1x.  Both the Women's Novice 4x, and Women's JV A 4x, won their events with an impressive margin.  The Women's Novice 4x clocked a 8:17.07 giving them the fastest time of their event and the Women's JV 4x clocked a 7:54.8 just under 1.5 seconds off the fastest time of their event, clocked by Sacred Heart.

All boats raced well both days and the majority of the crews rowed their best performance of the year today.  HT will travel to Philadelphia next weekend for the City Championships.

The Brady's Head To Philly

The Novice women's 4x will be travelling to Philadelphia today to get an early look at their competition.  They will be practicing the Novice women from Notre Dame Academy, Friends Select, Conestoga and Bachelors Barge Club over several 2k pieces.  This will be an excellent opporutnity for the ladies to get some racing experience against some exceptional crews.

The JV 4x Gets It's Groove Back

Our women's JV 4x of Francesca Loeber, Taylor Harper, Erika Harter, and Emily Davis got a bit of groove back this weekend at the ISA sculling Sprints, finishing just seconds from the Silver Medalists.  After only a week in the boat Taylor has done a fantastic job converting to sculling, and the boat is faster because of her energy and efforts.  Francesca Loeber has also given a new spark to the boat and hopefully they will have some inertia going into this weekends double header against some challenging crews.

Cooper Cup

10 Boats will compete for medals at the Cooper Cup this Sunday at home sweet home.  The men's 1x, Ltwt women's 4+, and Ltwt Boys 4+ will all have heats and finals.  Everyone else will just have a final.

Stotesbury

A note on Stotes...

Stotesbury, our biggest regatta, located in Philadelphia is fast approaching and I wanted to get a little info out about the regatta.

  • There are no JV 1x's.
  • You are permitted to only enter one boat per event.
  • You are not permitted to race twice.
  • As of today they have entered a girls Freshman 4x.
  • Usually the heat format is set up as a time trial, heat, semi, and final for the biggest events.
  • Some crews will only race one day while others may race every day depending on the size of the event.
  • There are generally a lot of lightweight 4's men and women.
Note.  Not everyone will race at Stotes.  The fastest boats in each event will go.  We are doing our absolute best to make sure that everyone races this season, and we have entered 8 and 9 entries for the New Jersey State Champs and the Cooper Cup.

Perfect weather, calm conditions and a double rainbow derigging party paved the way towards taking a big step forward for HT Crew this weekend. All boats dramatically improved and will have some great momentum and positive energy going into the next two weeks of training, which will be critical for success in late April and early May. All boats improved, but it was the Novice women's 4x, lwt men's 4+, and lwt women's 4+ that get the gold star this week.

The novice women went from last in Flick #3 to 2nd yesterday. They led most of the second half of the race only to get nipped by a talented Conestoga crew in the last 20 strokes. They will be especially determined over the next two weeks to improve in the hopes of leaving Stoga on the short side of the finish line the next time they meet.

The light men's four battled Moorestown and Radnor all the way down the course and found the extra effort in the final 20 strokes to finish 2nd in their heat and post one of the top 5 times of their event. They have been a crew that has rowed pretty well from the start and are now beginning to find a new intensity. If they bring the same attitude to practice for the next two weeks, the skies the limit...

The lightweight women have had an uphill battle since hopping into the boat last month, but seem to have turned a corner yesterday with an incredible performance. They were rowing even with Moorestown and Agnes Irwin for the early part of the race and pushed hard to finish third in their heat, a dramatic improvement over their first two outings this year. They took the initiative to improve their own start this week and Anna, their coxswain, came up with a great race plan that contributed to their turn around performance. They now have some good momentum and good mojo to bring to the next week of practice.

One side note; our Novice men's 4+ was well on their way to another successful performance before stroke seat, Ryan Clark caught a crab that ejected him from the boat and into the bosom of the Schuylkill River. Fortunately, he was not injured and was able to quickly swim back to the boat and finish the race.

Our Varsity women's 1x and Novice 2x braved their way through their first regatta in challenging conditions and represented their team well.

All in all it was a good weekend for the entire team and should provide some good fuel for the next two weeks of training; perhaps the most important of our outdoor season. It will be critical that we all work together to make sure that the next two weeks are productive and consistent. Parents please adhere to the practice policies and schedule appointments around practice times. I have been trying my best to schedule things as far in advance as possible but injuries, boat usage, and equipment problems have all reeked havoc on our best laid plans. We will continue to do all we can to make the schedules in advance and keep you updated on changes. Please check back to this site frequently this week, as we will have more information on spring break, traveling to Mercer for the ISA Sculling Championships and practice times.

Flick #4

Flick #4 is upon us and the team is in full prep mode. We have been using these races as tune ups for the bigger races. They have been a great tool to use to get lineups, racing starts, and racing strategies hammered down and ironed out. Below are a listing of events we are entered in and some general rules and regulations. There are some changes this week, including weigh ins for lightweights beginning at 8AM at St. Joe's Boathouse. Thanks again to all of the parents that have volunteered, fundraised, set up and managed the tent, etc.  The following are events we are entered and will compete in barring illnesses;

  • Event #47 (3rd event of the day) Girls Novice 2x; 9:10 am, Lane 2, White/orange boat
  • Event #42 (9th event of the day) Girls Novice 4x; 9:40 am, Lane 6, White boat blue deck
  • Event #38 (12th event of the day) Girls Ltwt 4+; 10:00 am, Lane 2, White boat

  • Event #13 (54th event of the day) Boys Ltwt 4+; 3:10pm, Lane 3, White Boat

Crews to watch for this week will be the Girls V1x and Girls Nov. 2x who will race for the first time in their respective boats.

Unfortunately, due to the high number of entries in the JV girls 4x, they will run this race Head Race style.  This means they will line up the boats and race down the course one at a time, recording their overall time.  Boats will most likely take a running start and row as hard as they can over the standard 2000-m course.  It is a certainly less entertaining way to run the race, as no one will know who wins until after the results are posted.   Please note some of the rule changes this week listed below:

  • Coaches meeting 7:30AM upstairs in Gillin Boathouse.
  • Referee's meeting 8:00AM upstairs in Gillin Boathouse.
  • Races start at 9:00AM; see www.phillyflicks.com for race schedule.
  • Weigh-in will be held at 8:00 AM at two locations: 1- St. Joe's Prep and 2- Vesper Boat Club.  There will be no afternoon weigh-in.
  • If you are providing a launch, please make sure it gets to the ST. Joe's Prep dock by 7:30.  Also, you must have someone pick up the launch at the end of the regatta.
  • Shuttle buses will be running this weekend.
  • Parking will be available in Fairmount Park for $10.00.
  • No overnight trailer parking in the St. Joe's Prep/Canoe Club parking.  Bring your trailers in on Sunday morning.
  • Parking passes will be collected.  No admittance onto Kelly Drive will be permitted without a pass.
  • A car or truck towing a chuck-wagon (small food trailer) must provide 2 passes as it takes up two parking spaces.
  • Cars must park diagonally on Kelly Drive.
  • Boat trailers and Team buses DO NOT need to provide parking passes to gain access to the Drive.
  • The parking police at the entrance of Kelly Drive will have a list of guest crews.  They will allow only the parent booster vehicles of those crews to enter (i.e. chuck wagons etc.).
  • We're encouraging everyone to use re-usable water bottles and water coolers in place of individual plastic bottles water bottles to reduce the amount of waste we're producing.
