The Haddon Hammer Brings an End to 2ks on the erg

First and foremost congratulations to fundraiser Mary Ellen Cuneo and President Shelia King for working their fingers to the bone and making this incredible event a roaring success. Several coaches came up to me and complimented us on our event and promised to come back next year which is a huge compliment, considering it was our first ever regatta. Not only have we made a little money from the event, but we have provided a great service to the New Jersey Rowing Community and we have something tangible to build on next year.

This event was not only a great success for Haddon Township as Regatta hosts, but it was a great success for our athletes. In fact it was the single best team performance I have witnessed in my year and a half as a coach for the club. Of the 28 Haddon Township competitors that participated in this event 26 of them posted a new personal record. New novice woman, Sara Rosenberg posted an 8:34.4 to take home the most-improved award on the team. She beat her previous score by a whopping 23.9 seconds. She is joined by varsity teammate, Erik Monzo who improved his previous best time by 23. 6 seconds. Novices Cassidy Leyendecker and Sam Lieb-Randall also posted new personal best scores that are 20 seconds or better faster than their previous score. Novices Jim Hawley and Evan Taylor shortened their scores by 15 seconds or more and Varsity athletes: Greg Cuneo, Quinn Fitzpatrick, Ryan Rousseau, Julie Cippon, Jillian Krieger, Emily Davis, and Caley O'Brien also all finished 5 seconds or faster over their previous personal best.

Not only did our athletes perform well individually, but they raced smarter and tougher than I have ever seen them race. Haddon Township athletes were routinely in the bottom 1/3 of the standings in the 1st 500-m of the race only to coolly and calmly climb back into the top 2-5-or 10 spots of their event or heat. As a team, we came into the regatta with a plan and executed our goals, almost to the member. Many of our athletes such as Catie Ely and Mandy Fry vaulted high into the standings after sensible starts to win or place in their heat. In fact 13 of our 28 athletes finished in the top 10 in their event and 7 of those 13 finished in the top 5. 2 of our athletes were able to take home medals, Senior Greg Cuneo, who rowed to a 5.1 second improvement over his previous best, placed 2nd in his lightweight men's event, and Freshman Emily Donovan raced an outstanding race to finish 2nd overall (of 33) in the Women's HS Novice event. Sophomore Julie Cippon and Catie Ely finished 4th and 5th in their events, Senior Emily Davis became the first female at Haddon Township to break 7:50, crossing the line in 7:46.0, a 5.3 second improvement over her previous best and good enough to place 5th in the women's open event and Quinn Fitzpatrick rushed across the finish line in 6th place.

I truly can't remember a time when I was more proud of our athletes. To the person, every member of the team fought tooth and nail for the score they achieved and there is not a single score that I am disappointed with today. Even those few athletes that didn't quite have their top performance showed up and raced hard and fought with a new resolve that has not been evident on this team in the past and the results where exciting. I hope all of the members of the team have a new confidence going into this spring season and are excited to get back to racing on the water. One thing that we truly lacked last year, was the ability to stay calm in stressful situations, causing blow ups and initiating illogical racing strategies. Today, it was an inspiring site to watch Sophomores Catie Ely, Julie Cippon, and Jillian Krieger create a great racing strategy on their own and follow it to the letter with unprecedented results; to walk down the line of pained and panicked faces in the women's HS open event only to find Senior Emily Davis, and Junior Tori King calmly pushing their way up the standings, to watch Senior Greg Cuneo work his way into second place early in the race after a disappointing race two weeks ago and finally, to see things start to go wrong for Emily Gartland with 600-m to go but to watch her really gut it out to get across the line under 8 minutes. These are things we simply were unable to do as a team last year. I hope it is evident to all of the athletes, the value of their hard work and determination this winter.

Though we still have a lot of legos to place and a much bigger house to build this spring and next year, I am very happy with the team's performance today and thus far this winter. I am confidant, if the athletes attack training on the water like they have attacked this winter training season that we will find a new success this spring.

PRACTICE CHANGE!

All practices are tentatively set for 3 PM today and tomorrow. Please check back because cancellations may occur.

Winter Training a Huge Success at Haddon Township

Although the Haddon Township Crew Club may not step into liquid for another week or two, due to the impending winter weather, the Haddon Hammer marks the end of winter racing and testing and the beginning of the happiest of days, on-water-training and racing. This year's winter training season has been an incredible experience. Our five captains have made it a priority to provide great leadership and have more input on the daily runnings of the team. With that in mind we (the coaches) have given them the freedom to do some new and interesting things this year with the "Captain's practice". A concept we initiated late in the fall, the "Captain's practices" give the rowers an opportunity to decide what workout they will do that day, within a framework of time/intensity which I have provided. As always, the HT kids thought way outside of the box and Senior Caley O'Brien came up with the idea of having a practice on the trails of the Wisahickon. Despite being one of the coldest days of the year, the gang, trooped out as a team to trapse through gorgous, Valley Green park.

It was a memorable experience for the team and I was delighted to rekindle my love of hill running in the woods (I'm not sure the kids were as enthused) and I was so proud of Caley and the kids for coming up with such a great idea that exposed them to such a different athletic experience.

In early February, the team again traveled to Villanova University to compete in the Main Line Slide, the first year we have competed at this event as a team. It was another opportunity for our athletes to attempt to balance a stressful race environment and an eagerness to perform well. I was truly excited to see how close the team has become and how well they handled the situation. Junior captains Emily Gartland and Tori King performed exceptionally well placing in the top 15 (10 and 11th) out of 62 athletes and decreasing their own personal record by substantial margins. Sophomore Amanda Fry also performed well placing 20th. Senior Captain Quinn Fitzpatrick also cracked the top ten finishing 9th of 27 with a gutsy performance that also marks his new personal record.

Additionally, the kids have taken the lead in coming up with names for the new boats and this years winners are the "Aggression" and the "Audacity" chosen from a bin of exceptional characteristics that they feel they've learned from their experiences with the HT Crew Team, sticking with a tradition that was started at our inception in 2003.

With a new boat on the way and one more hurdle to clear this weekend, we are excited about the prospects of Spring racing and all of the kids are bursting with anticipation to get back in the boats.

As an athlete one of the hardest things you are charged with is coming in every day and putting your lego on the house with a smile on your face. I am so proud that we have done that every single day this winter and I know it will bring us continued success this spring.

Snow etc.

Be prepared for last minute changes to practice times. We may need to move the late practice up to 3:15, which, most likely, will not happen today, but will likely happen tomorrow if school isn't cancelled.

Additionally, all athletes need to follow the instructions below to submit online waivers for our event on February 28th:

Annual Waiver Submittal Instructions

Instructions

  1. Share your Roster Code UT-362319 with all active athletes in your RegattaCentral roster.
  2. Instruct the athletes to go to https://www.regattacentral.com/athletes/ where they can enter your Roster Code and submit their waiver.
IMPORTANT: Waivers must be submitted by the athlete or their legal guardian. (Coaches are not permitted to submit a waiver on a rower's behalf)

How does this process work?

  1. When an athlete enters your Roster Code and their last name the system will attempt to locate their record in your roster. If it is located they'll be prompted to submit their waiver and receive their free, non-privileged USRowing Membership ID (Required beginning in 2008 for all USRowing-registered regattas)
  2. If the athlete has not yet been added to your roster the system will automatically add them. This is an especially helpful and time-saving feature at the beginning of rowing seasons where you may have many new athletes.

HT Opens their Season at the Main Line Slide

The Haddon Township Crew Club opened their spring season this weekend at Villanova University at the Main Line Slide with some exceptional results. With nerves at their apex, in a difficult and stressful testing environment some of our athletes performed exceptionally well. Two of the most notable performances came from juniors; Emily Gartland and Tori King who finally shattered the 8 min mark for 2k. Tori posted a nearly 15 second improvement over her previous best and 17 seconds over her March 14th, 2009 mark, rowing a 7:51 and vying for the top spot on the team with senior Emily Davis! Other notable performance were Mandy Fry who posted an official test time of 8:04; 13 seconds over her previous best, and Quinn Fitzpatrick who fought tooth and nail to come in under the 7:20 mark at 7:19.9, a 5 second improvement over his previous best. Catie Ely has also continues to dramatically improve posting an 8:18.9, finishing just .1 of a second behind teammate Julie Cippon and improving her score over last year's mark by 28 seconds!

This was a great success for our first test of the year, especially amidst a lot of distractions and disruptions. To post a good score in that environment shows a lot of maturity as a team, something we lacked a little of last year. Without the distraction of a race postponement and three idle days off practice/school, I'm sure the Haddon Hammer will bring even better results.

MLS

All. Tomorrow will be the Main Line Slide at long last. I hope all of you have been able to get some sort of aerobic work in over the last few days. I will be at the venue for weigh ins tomorrow, but please feel free to call me on my cell before then with any questions. Remember, come to the race with purpose, with a plan, and be cool relaxed. Contain your nervous energy and control your emotions. Stretch out tonight and eat some carbs. Tomorrow morning, and before the race you should stay away from excessive protein. Since most of the light men race within 90 minutes of Greg's race, I think it would be nice to be there for your teammate and show up a few minutes early so you don't miss his race. If someone wants to voluteer to cox Greg, just let me and him know and you can do it instead of me. If anyone specifically wants me to cox them, just ask via email. If there are more than one requests, I will let you know via email whom I'll be sitting behind. Greg and I will cox the two fastest (to date) light guys, so Greg please plan on sticking around after your race for a little (email if you can't). The light guys will be expected to stick around and cox the girls.

NOVICES HAVE PRACTICE with Coach Victor tomorrow at the school from 10-12 as planned.

Because you don't have school again tomorrow it is really critical that you are continuing to perform workouts this week. Tomorrow's workout is again 3x8 minutes with 5 minutes rest at 6k -1. Please try to get in this amount of intensity, even if you don't have access to an ergometer. For those of you attending the Main Line Slide, please just be cautious to do not do excercises that you haven't normally been doing. I.E. running or erging is fine. Snow runs, excessive body circuits, or any sort of skiing is not a good option. Not a good idea to have sore muscles for Saturday.

Practice is Cancelled Due to Inclement Weather

Due to Blizzard 2010 #2, practice is cancelled today. It is essential that rowers get in a workout today, with the disruption of our practice schedule due to the cancellation of the Main Line Slide and the empending day off tomorrow, we need to continue to build on all of the hard work we have done so far. Please, get out and do at least 60 minutes of aerobic work today, preferably a run. Remember we have the Main Line Slide this weekend and the boxer trail next weekend so it won't help anyone to sit around today.

Due to the empending snow store the late practice will be moved to 3:15

I appologize for the late notice, however I have just been notified from the school that games and practices have all been moved up. Any student who was in the late group and has a scheduling conflict with the 3:15 may be excused from practice.
