Happy Thanksgiving!

Certainly this year the Haddon Township Crew Club has a lot to be thankful for. We have had one of the most exciting and productive Fall seasons yet, we have had two of our seniors go on official recruiting visits to colleges, and Senior, Emily Gartland received a partial scholarship because of her participation in our club! This is a goal that I feel the club should be particularly proud of. Because of everyone's hard work, we are literally creating opportunity for our athletes that are tangibly, positively effecting their lives.

We continue to push forward this spring and hope for the most successful season yet. As many of you know, we are working hard to bring in new equipment and more seats for our kids, and we are energized to host and participate in this year's Haddon Hammer.

As the club moves forward we are continually dependent upon the energy of not only our athletes but our parents, coaches, alumni, and of course, our board. The parents have had a wealth of exciting ideas and I'm looking forward to seeing these innovations become reality.

Hopefully, this is just the tip of the iceberg. I firmly believe, with continued energy and willful persistence that we can continue to push forward and achieve even bigger and better things in 2011 and beyond.

Happy Thanksgiving once again to everyone! I am truly thankful to be a part of this program and to have the opportunity to coach such an amazing group of young individuals.

There will be a lot going on the next two weeks (as usual). This week we will practice at normal time except for this Friday afternoon. We will head to Philadelphia immediately following school on Friday and all can expect a 3:50 launch time. We will try to be off the water by 5:40. This will depend on the speed of rigging that the kids can accomplish.

Next week, because of off days and scheduling we will have practice on the following times:
Tuesday November 2nd: All at 12:30

Thursday, November 4th: ALL at 10:30am

Friday, November 5th: Early group at 10:30am and late group at 12:30.
Saturday, November 6th: Captain's practice at the school at 10AM

The Jingle Bell Run/Walk for Arthritis is a holiday-themed event that will take place on Saturday, December 11th at the Camden County Boathouse in Cooper River Park, Pennsauken, NJ. Registration starts at 8:30am. The event flyer is attached.

I have also attached the volunteer form which includes a description of the volunteer positions. We need volunteers to assist in event set up, registration, cheering, water stations, and other assistance. The volunteer arrival time depends on the type of volunteering you are doing but you will be notified once you have submitted your form. Volunteers that register by Nov. 1 are guaranteed a t-shirt but of course we still accept volunteers after that date. You may register with the attached form (which you can return to me via Emily) or online at www.camdencountyjbr.kintera.org.

Feel free to pass along this information to any teams or clubs that you think would be interested. Let me know if you have any questions. I can be reached on my cell phone (609) 707-1909. We look forward to having you at the best race of the holiday season!

Thank you,

Practice Schedule Change

I apologize for the late notice, however we will only have one practice on Thursday, October 21st and Friday October 22nd. Any students that have a previously scheduled conflict on those days, no matter what the reason, will be excused from practice if they notify the coaches in the next two days. I again apologize for the schedule change. All students should report to the early practice on those days.

There will be a coached captain's practice this Saturday.

By the way. Our old assistant coach, Michiel Bartman was in the actual dutch boat that won this race. That boat went on to win a silver medal in the Olympics.

Head of the Housatonic

Congratulations to all athletes who traveled to Connecticut to race in the Head of the Housatonic Regatta today. As expected we found tough competition in all events, but the team performed admirably. Notable performances from Mandy Fry in the HS 1x, the Women's Varsity 4x (Catie Ely, Julie Cipon, Emily Gartland and Tori King) (just 5 seconds out of the medals) and the Men's HS 4x of Ryan Clark, Erik Monzo, Nelson Remetz and Matt Glace who also finished an impressive 5th. This weekend was a real stepping stone in our club's development. Just three years ago we did not have the resources or the ambition to undertake such an adventure and thanks to the efforts of the athletes, parents and the board for making this possible. A special thanks to Jeff King for the use of his monster truck. Certainly one of the things that I love about our sport is the more work you put in, the greater the reward and this weekend clearly personified that.

I hope this is just the tip of the iceberg. I think travelling especially in the fall makes racing and rowing so much more fun and I know at least I will remember the adventures and misadventures of this trip for some time.

I'm anxious to get back to work on Monday and practice will be at 12:20 at the boathouse. Athletes should get to the boathouse and immediately begin to unload boats as quickly as possible. We will need to get in a full workout on Monday in preperation for the Head of the Charles. I expect practice to be over by 2:40.

Rower's Intuition.

Rowing is a sport that requires a lot of intuition. When you are first learning it can be difficult to understand how to improve because your bodies do not have the subtle muscle memory required to move the boat efficiently and effectively (aka. smooth and fast)...yet.

Take a look at the videos below to help clarify the rhythm of a fast moving crew.

Look for the things we have been working on in practice: Slow recovery, engagement of the legs during the drive, proper timing, and body control.

Watching these elite rowers and playing the clips over and over in your head as you row will help you as you develop your skills.

Men's 2x (Australian quad members)

Dan Noonan (1x)
Row2k Resources

Be sure to write down any questions you may have and we will work through them at practice.
Monday's practice will be from 12:20-2:20. All rowers should report at this time. Next Friday will now be scheduled at regular practice time. Disregard my previous note, again there will be the normal two practice sessions on Friday.

Practice Schedule

Practices for the Varsity will again rotate next week, with the Varsity men in the early session and the varsity women in the afternoon session, this will go from October 11th-October 23rd. The women will switch back to the early session from October 24th-November 6th. Novices will remain in the earlier practice for the remainder of the year.

Next Friday, October 15th will be a row with the novices day. All Varsity are to report to the early practice.

Saturday, October 16th, we are in the process of planning a trip to the Wissahickon in Philadelphia to run trails. More information on that event will follow.

Practices will continue to get colder from here on out, please make sure all students are prepared for cold/wet weather. Long sleeve, synthetic materials are best. Sweatshirts are strongly discouraged and hoodies are banned.

Monday, September 27, 2010

I would like to keep the novices at the early practice for the remainder of the fall season because of limited coaches availability. If this causes any problems or there are any previously scheduled conflicts, please let me know.

For clarification, we will follow the schedule as is, with the following exception. ALL NOVICES WILL BE AT 3:15 FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE FALL.

HT Wins 10 Medals: Turning the Heat Up at The City Championships

After a frustrating week of practice Haddon Township showed up to the race course with a new resolve today. Though some boats suffered from the loss of practice time this week, HT came away from another race with a collection of medals.

Congratulations go to out the Women's JV 4x, who battled Sacred Heart and Springside Academy all the way down the course but came out victorious to become the 2010 Philadelphia City Champions. The quad of Julie Cippon, Emily Gartland, Catie Ely, and Tori King got their first Varsity medals at this years City Championships by defeating Sacred Heart by just under 3 seconds.

Congratulations also go out to Caley O'Brien, for placing third in the Varsity Women's Single, Greg Cuneo for placing 2nd in the Varsity men's 1x, and to the Freshman 4x of: Nick Herceg, Alec Rogers, Alex Blue, and Sam Lieberandall for placing 3rd in their event in another nail biter.

All crews did exceptionally well in today's regatta, but the team will have to refocus and have a solid 2 weeks of practice in preparation for the Largest Scholastic Regatta in the World, STOTESBURY!

HT Crew Crowns 4 State Champions and Collects 21 Medals

The Haddon Township Crew Club had a great day today at the Garden State Championships, crowning 4 crews New Jersey State Champions. They are (in no particular order):
  • Novice Women's 4x
  • JV Women's 4x
  • Varsity Men's 2x
  • Varsity Women's 1x
Ht also hauled in a second place finishes in the Men's Novice 4x, and Men's Varsity 4x and third place in the women's JV 2x. The Women's Senior 2x and the men's JV 2x (novices in a varsity event) both finished fourth in their events with solid races.

I am extremely proud of the effort put forth by the Men's Varsity 4x. They have had a tough season thus far and Ryan Rosseau, Matt Glace, Erik Monzo, and Bill Harte fought like mad to get across the line ahead of their third place rivals, winning silver in a photo finish.

I think it was a very important and special moment in the team's short history to stand on the medals dock with so many Haddon Township athletes wearing medals around their necks. As a coach, it is always special when the entire team performs so well and so many athletes have a good experience especially after how hard we have worked this fall and winter.

NOVICE MEN'S 4X FOR TOMORROW: We still have not been able to gain access to the regatta tomrrow for your boat. I would assume unless otherwise notified that you will not be racing. In the event of a last minute scratch you will be notified tomorrow morning and your race would be at either 2:36 or 2:42 pm.

Here But Not There

Parents, Athletes, Coaches and HTCrew Friends;

Though we had a rough weekend at the ISA Regatta, we are happy to congratulate the Men's Novice 4x of Nick Herceg, Alex Blue, Alec Rogers, and Sam Liebe Randall, who had a fantastic race to beat out Conestoga in the last few meters. They battled the crew from Berwyn all the way down the course, only to be passed in the last 500-m, though they hung tough and battled back to win a nail biter, one of the closest races in Haddon Township History. I'm very proud of their efforts and of the team's efforts thus far in the season.

Oftentimes when you are constantly playing in the grass its hard to tell that it is growing under your feet and I want to take this opportunity to remind everyone how much our grass has grown in two years. For those parents and athletes that were not on the team in 2008, I think it’s important to remember who we were, who we are, and who we strive to become.

What we have been able to accomplish:

Your efforts have yielded tangible results, which have meant an improved experience for our incredible kids at Haddon Township, so far, your work has yielded:

  • The purchase of 4 BOATS IN TWO YEARS. Including 2 brand new quads, a double and single. All of which have been put to immediate good use.
  • If your kids have been with us from the start they have been coached by 2 OLYMPIANS. Renee Hykel and 3 time Olympic Medalist and World Class Coach, Michiel Bartman and 2 elite rowers, Michelle Secsher and Jeneatte Dailey.
  • Races, races, races. More quantity more quality. In 2007-08 combined, Haddon Township rowed in 33 boats in 12 races (fall and spring). In the spring of 2007 Haddon Township raced at five regattas and entered 3 or fewer boats each regatta. To my knowledge, and from what I've been able to look up from previous race results, Haddon Township won 2 of those races and never won a varsity race.
  • This year alone we will have entered approximately 91 boats in 14 races (fall and spring). In just Manny Flick 2,3, and 4 we placed top three in 19 races and 7 boats of Haddon Township athletes have had the pleasure of coming across the finish line in first place. We have already won three Varsity races this year. In fact, the 24 boats that have raced in three race (excluding this weekend) have only finished worse than third 5 times.
  • College coaches now routinely come to our practices to recruit. Several of our athletes have been in contact with coaches about possibly getting scholarships to compete at the University level.
  • Captain’s now routinely organize practices, students call if they are going to be late, and athletes now take responsibility for their own development within the program. If your kids row at Haddon Township they have stated their athletic goals and are working every day to achieve them. They are learning the often challenging and difficult process of turning dreams into reality. We are teaching and have taught the positive attributes of hard work, team work, good sportsmanship, goal-setting, organization and determination. Everyday they show up at practice they are learning to overcome adversity with determination and a positive attitude, they are learning to turn bad races into positive learning experiences, and achieving even more than they thought that they could.

A note of thanks. For those of you who have not had the opportunity to race every weekend I am truly sorry however, I think you should understand, though we have come a long way, we still simply don't have enough seats to fill all of the rowers. That is why I made the decision last year (and have continued this year)to double my workload and organize two practices a day, and why all of the boats (except our newest) must be double and sometimes triple used at practice and races.

I'm not sure some parents or athletes always understand the momentous task of running the day to day operations of the team or the incredible progress we have made in such a short time, so I would to take a moment to thank those individuals who have worked overtime, often on a daily basis to make it happen. I think it is important for everyone to know how very hard the board and the coaches are working to provide a good environment for your children.

Who to thank:

John Glace: Goodness, you have been a life saver on so many occasions and have probably taken your share of lumps from members at CRC for requesting to let us use their equipment so often. I know we call on you, literally daily, and I'm sure we are a huge drain on your time and energy, but the team could not run without you.

Shelia King: Your tireless efforts for the team have oftentimes gone unsung, yet you still plug on, helping to organize events, trailering, managing the team; being one of the first parents on the regatta course and last to leave, and spending inordinate amounts of time working to push the team forward in general. Your job is not one that I envy, but you do it with energy and determination, and you have helped the team provide an incredible atmosphere for its students.

MaryEllen Cuneo: I still haven't fully comprehended the incredible amount of energy you have put forth to fundraising. Your hard work has been a huge cog in the wheel of our development. I still remember coming to the first board meeting and telling the original members that we had to nearly quintuple our current fund raising budget and you volunteered without hesitation and immediately took to the task of yanking us forward. We will sorely miss you and Greg next year and will have to appoint more than one person to do the job you have been doing yourself for the last year.

Jeff King: Driving the trailer, loaning your truck (even though it’s probably not good for it), helping to set up for events; you have been an incredible asset to our team, I can’t personally thank you enough.

Justine Stevens: Cutting bagels so the kids don't cut their fingers off, volunteering for more and more tasks, and working events like the Haddon Hammer, you have continued to take on bigger roles on the board even when it hasn't always been convenient for you.

Marie Ely: thank you for your continued support and your increased role on the team. Volunteering for events and always eager to help, we appreciate your contributions to the team.

Dave Fry: Driving the trailer, fixing the launches, organizing work days, and always showing up to events with a smile, you have been a joy to have as part of this team.

Lori Harte: The effort and organization that you have brought to the team has been incredible. Always at events and always quietly working hard for the team, just like your son. We will miss both of you when Bill goes on to bigger things next year.

Luann O'Brien: Organizing the incredible banquet last year and always positively working hard for the program, thank you for your efforts.

Ed Davis: Organizing pasta parties at your house and always willing to attend events and work to make everyone's job easier. I appreciate all you do for the club.

Barb Bowen: Your role as our faculty liaison has been a great asset to the team. Thank you for your continued help.

Coaches: Without your continued effort there simply wouldn't be a team. Your energy your input and your hard work has done volumes for our kids.

We have gotten here but we aren’t there.

Though we have come a long way we still have a long way to go and we need your help, your patience, your support and your positive energy. Our biggest challenge is finding enough competitive seats for our athletes. Currently we have 27 active athletes and only 15 seats. We do borrow boats from CRC, a relationship that we have thoroughly stressed and exhausted (ask john) with our constant needs, but that still only gets us to 21 seats for 27 rowers. This is the ONLY reason we have been unable to race all boats all the time. This is the ONLY reason some of our athletes have had to run or erg at practices instead of row. I truly want nothing more than the ability to put kids in boats they can be successful in and have them row every single practice and at every race. We know how hard it can be to have to run or miss a race, and as a coach it is the worst part of my job to tell kids they can’t race because we don’t have the equipment. This has been a problem and will continue to be a problem for us until we can afford buy enough equipment to support our needs. As a coach I ask for your patience and your help. We need hands at events, we need new ideas, we need fundraisers, and most importantly we need optimism for our goals and the discipline to get there.

Additionally, in order to make this team more sustainable I think we need to reduce the role of the kids involvement in fundraising. We want them to have a life outside of crew! Ideas like the Haddon Hammer have made great strides towards that end. We need more ideas like this and we need more people willing to get a little dirty making this program the best it can be.

These are the hurdles we continue to face and will continue to fight aggressively to overcome.

Thank you for your efforts.

Sincerely,

Scott Wisniewski

Township Has A Fine Sunday By The River

On a beautiful sunny day in Philadelphia, the Haddon Township Crew Club quietly came to Manny Flick #2 and placed top 2 in 5 of the 7 events it entered.

Haddon Township's Emily Donovan, Cassidy Leyendecker, Sara Rosenberg, and Salena Silvaria began the day with the Girls Freshman Quad Event. A race that was hottly contested in the first 500-m however the HT girls proved to be the fittest crew in the race, rowing to a nearly 9 second victory over Philadelphia rival, Conestoga High School. Their hard work this winter and last fall was certainly evident as they opened their lead through the half way point of the race to win by a sizable margin.

In this, her 5th time in the 1x, one of the most sensitive and difficult boats to race, Haddon Township's own, Caley O'Brien took the lead at the 300-m mark after a modest start and never looked back. When she finally crossed the finish line her margin of victory over her Delaware Valley Rival was over 21 seconds. She rowed a smart and clean race to take home her first single scull victory in a boat appropriately named the "Independence".

The Boys Varsity 2x of Quinn Fitzpatrick and Gregory Cuneo fought hard through the middle thousand battling Philadelphia rival, Conestoga High School all the way down the course to take a well earned second place finish. They topped their friends from Berwyn by just over 1 tenth of a second to earn a top 2 place in the Varsity 2x event.

The women's Varsity Quad of Julie Cippon, Emily Gartland, Emily Davis, and Tori King forged their way through a 7 mph head wind to find their way to a top two finish, besting Philadephia's Springside High School by just 2 hundreths of a second. Though they dropped an early boat length's lead over the stellar crew from Episcopal (last year's Stotesbury Champions), they steadily climbed back into the race with a solid middle and last 500-m. They finished a respectable 7 seconds behind last year's Stotesbury Champions and have been an incredible example of what hard work and determination can help you achieve in a year's time.

Though HT Crew has a long racing season yet to come, this was a great first start. I have been continually impressed with the improved maturity and racing accumen the team has shown this spring and i'm looking forward to continued energy at practice as we move towards Manny Flick #3 next weekend.

The women's group will practice at 3:15 this week and the men will practice at 5:15. We will try to keep this schedule, rotating every two weeks, for the remainder of the season.

On a final, but unfortunate note, I was disappointed with the attendance at the re-rigging session at 4:30 this afternoon at the boathouse. It is THE TEAM'S responsibility to make sure all of the boats make it back to the boathouse and are rigged following a regatta. In the future, it will be a requirement that all athletes return to the boathouse following racing. If some individuals decide it is not necessary to help their teammates unpack and re-rig after a trip, they will find themselves rigging boats by themselves on Monday afternoon while everyone else has off. Parents, I ask for your help in enforcing this rule. We have assigned boats/oars/equipment to individuals for a reason and you must return to the boathouse to make sure that all of our very valuable equipment has returned to the boathouse and is ready for Tuesday's practice. In the past we have misplaced equipment or left it behind and it has cost the club a lot of money and today we nearly made another very costly mistake.

Men's Varsity 2x: Greg/Quinn
Women's JV 4x: Catie/Jill/Kelsey/Mandy
Women's Varsity 4x: Julie/Emily G./Emily D./Tori

All athletes (competing this week or not) need to go to regattacentral and follow the instructions below to fill out an online waiver. No athlete will be permitted to participate in this event without a waiver so please get this done today:

Annual Waiver Submittal Instructions
Instructions
Share your Roster Code UT-362319 with all active athletes in your RegattaCentral roster.
Instruct the athletes to go to https://www.regattacentral.com/athletes/ where they can enter your Roster Code and submit their waiver.IMPORTANT: Waivers must be submitted by the athlete or their legal guardian. (Coaches are not permitted to submit a waiver on a rower's behalf)
How does this process work?
When an athlete enters your Roster Code and their last name the system will attempt to locate their record in your roster. If it is located they'll be prompted to submit their waiver and receive their free, non-privileged USRowing Membership ID (Required beginning in 2008 for all USRowing-registered regattas)
If the athlete has not yet been added to your roster the system will automatically add them. This is an especially helpful and time-saving feature at the beginning of rowing seasons where you may have many new athletes.

The Haddon Hammer Brings an End to 2ks on the erg

First and foremost congratulations to fundraiser Mary Ellen Cuneo and President Shelia King for working their fingers to the bone and making this incredible event a roaring success. Several coaches came up to me and complimented us on our event and promised to come back next year which is a huge compliment, considering it was our first ever regatta. Not only have we made a little money from the event, but we have provided a great service to the New Jersey Rowing Community and we have something tangible to build on next year.

This event was not only a great success for Haddon Township as Regatta hosts, but it was a great success for our athletes. In fact it was the single best team performance I have witnessed in my year and a half as a coach for the club. Of the 28 Haddon Township competitors that participated in this event 26 of them posted a new personal record. New novice woman, Sara Rosenberg posted an 8:34.4 to take home the most-improved award on the team. She beat her previous score by a whopping 23.9 seconds. She is joined by varsity teammate, Erik Monzo who improved his previous best time by 23. 6 seconds. Novices Cassidy Leyendecker and Sam Lieb-Randall also posted new personal best scores that are 20 seconds or better faster than their previous score. Novices Jim Hawley and Evan Taylor shortened their scores by 15 seconds or more and Varsity athletes: Greg Cuneo, Quinn Fitzpatrick, Ryan Rousseau, Julie Cippon, Jillian Krieger, Emily Davis, and Caley O'Brien also all finished 5 seconds or faster over their previous personal best.

Not only did our athletes perform well individually, but they raced smarter and tougher than I have ever seen them race. Haddon Township athletes were routinely in the bottom 1/3 of the standings in the 1st 500-m of the race only to coolly and calmly climb back into the top 2-5-or 10 spots of their event or heat. As a team, we came into the regatta with a plan and executed our goals, almost to the member. Many of our athletes such as Catie Ely and Mandy Fry vaulted high into the standings after sensible starts to win or place in their heat. In fact 13 of our 28 athletes finished in the top 10 in their event and 7 of those 13 finished in the top 5. 2 of our athletes were able to take home medals, Senior Greg Cuneo, who rowed to a 5.1 second improvement over his previous best, placed 2nd in his lightweight men's event, and Freshman Emily Donovan raced an outstanding race to finish 2nd overall (of 33) in the Women's HS Novice event. Sophomore Julie Cippon and Catie Ely finished 4th and 5th in their events, Senior Emily Davis became the first female at Haddon Township to break 7:50, crossing the line in 7:46.0, a 5.3 second improvement over her previous best and good enough to place 5th in the women's open event and Quinn Fitzpatrick rushed across the finish line in 6th place.

I truly can't remember a time when I was more proud of our athletes. To the person, every member of the team fought tooth and nail for the score they achieved and there is not a single score that I am disappointed with today. Even those few athletes that didn't quite have their top performance showed up and raced hard and fought with a new resolve that has not been evident on this team in the past and the results where exciting. I hope all of the members of the team have a new confidence going into this spring season and are excited to get back to racing on the water. One thing that we truly lacked last year, was the ability to stay calm in stressful situations, causing blow ups and initiating illogical racing strategies. Today, it was an inspiring site to watch Sophomores Catie Ely, Julie Cippon, and Jillian Krieger create a great racing strategy on their own and follow it to the letter with unprecedented results; to walk down the line of pained and panicked faces in the women's HS open event only to find Senior Emily Davis, and Junior Tori King calmly pushing their way up the standings, to watch Senior Greg Cuneo work his way into second place early in the race after a disappointing race two weeks ago and finally, to see things start to go wrong for Emily Gartland with 600-m to go but to watch her really gut it out to get across the line under 8 minutes. These are things we simply were unable to do as a team last year. I hope it is evident to all of the athletes, the value of their hard work and determination this winter.

Though we still have a lot of legos to place and a much bigger house to build this spring and next year, I am very happy with the team's performance today and thus far this winter. I am confidant, if the athletes attack training on the water like they have attacked this winter training season that we will find a new success this spring.

PRACTICE CHANGE!

All practices are tentatively set for 3 PM today and tomorrow. Please check back because cancellations may occur.

Winter Training a Huge Success at Haddon Township

Although the Haddon Township Crew Club may not step into liquid for another week or two, due to the impending winter weather, the Haddon Hammer marks the end of winter racing and testing and the beginning of the happiest of days, on-water-training and racing. This year's winter training season has been an incredible experience. Our five captains have made it a priority to provide great leadership and have more input on the daily runnings of the team. With that in mind we (the coaches) have given them the freedom to do some new and interesting things this year with the "Captain's practice". A concept we initiated late in the fall, the "Captain's practices" give the rowers an opportunity to decide what workout they will do that day, within a framework of time/intensity which I have provided. As always, the HT kids thought way outside of the box and Senior Caley O'Brien came up with the idea of having a practice on the trails of the Wisahickon. Despite being one of the coldest days of the year, the gang, trooped out as a team to trapse through gorgous, Valley Green park.

It was a memorable experience for the team and I was delighted to rekindle my love of hill running in the woods (I'm not sure the kids were as enthused) and I was so proud of Caley and the kids for coming up with such a great idea that exposed them to such a different athletic experience.

In early February, the team again traveled to Villanova University to compete in the Main Line Slide, the first year we have competed at this event as a team. It was another opportunity for our athletes to attempt to balance a stressful race environment and an eagerness to perform well. I was truly excited to see how close the team has become and how well they handled the situation. Junior captains Emily Gartland and Tori King performed exceptionally well placing in the top 15 (10 and 11th) out of 62 athletes and decreasing their own personal record by substantial margins. Sophomore Amanda Fry also performed well placing 20th. Senior Captain Quinn Fitzpatrick also cracked the top ten finishing 9th of 27 with a gutsy performance that also marks his new personal record.

Additionally, the kids have taken the lead in coming up with names for the new boats and this years winners are the "Aggression" and the "Audacity" chosen from a bin of exceptional characteristics that they feel they've learned from their experiences with the HT Crew Team, sticking with a tradition that was started at our inception in 2003.

With a new boat on the way and one more hurdle to clear this weekend, we are excited about the prospects of Spring racing and all of the kids are bursting with anticipation to get back in the boats.

As an athlete one of the hardest things you are charged with is coming in every day and putting your lego on the house with a smile on your face. I am so proud that we have done that every single day this winter and I know it will bring us continued success this spring.

Snow etc.

Be prepared for last minute changes to practice times. We may need to move the late practice up to 3:15, which, most likely, will not happen today, but will likely happen tomorrow if school isn't cancelled.

Additionally, all athletes need to follow the instructions below to submit online waivers for our event on February 28th:

Annual Waiver Submittal Instructions

Instructions

  1. Share your Roster Code UT-362319 with all active athletes in your RegattaCentral roster.
  2. Instruct the athletes to go to https://www.regattacentral.com/athletes/ where they can enter your Roster Code and submit their waiver.
IMPORTANT: Waivers must be submitted by the athlete or their legal guardian. (Coaches are not permitted to submit a waiver on a rower's behalf)

How does this process work?

  1. When an athlete enters your Roster Code and their last name the system will attempt to locate their record in your roster. If it is located they'll be prompted to submit their waiver and receive their free, non-privileged USRowing Membership ID (Required beginning in 2008 for all USRowing-registered regattas)
  2. If the athlete has not yet been added to your roster the system will automatically add them. This is an especially helpful and time-saving feature at the beginning of rowing seasons where you may have many new athletes.

Support

  • USRowing: Support is available by both email and telephone (800) 314-4769, weekdays 9am to 4:30pm EST

Practice Tomorrow

Conestoga has decided to cancel on us, unfortuantely at the last minute so we will not be going to Philadelphia tomorrow for practice. Lets plan on 10-12 tomorrow at the school. I am having some transportation issues so I appologize if I will be unable to attend the first practice this evening. I should be there in time for the 2nd. Rob will be at practice. If you have a conflict with the practice change tomorrow please contact me.

HT Opens their Season at the Main Line Slide

The Haddon Township Crew Club opened their spring season this weekend at Villanova University at the Main Line Slide with some exceptional results. With nerves at their apex, in a difficult and stressful testing environment some of our athletes performed exceptionally well. Two of the most notable performances came from juniors; Emily Gartland and Tori King who finally shattered the 8 min mark for 2k. Tori posted a nearly 15 second improvement over her previous best and 17 seconds over her March 14th, 2009 mark, rowing a 7:51 and vying for the top spot on the team with senior Emily Davis! Other notable performance were Mandy Fry who posted an official test time of 8:04; 13 seconds over her previous best, and Quinn Fitzpatrick who fought tooth and nail to come in under the 7:20 mark at 7:19.9, a 5 second improvement over his previous best. Catie Ely has also continues to dramatically improve posting an 8:18.9, finishing just .1 of a second behind teammate Julie Cippon and improving her score over last year's mark by 28 seconds!

This was a great success for our first test of the year, especially amidst a lot of distractions and disruptions. To post a good score in that environment shows a lot of maturity as a team, something we lacked a little of last year. Without the distraction of a race postponement and three idle days off practice/school, I'm sure the Haddon Hammer will bring even better results.

MLS

All. Tomorrow will be the Main Line Slide at long last. I hope all of you have been able to get some sort of aerobic work in over the last few days. I will be at the venue for weigh ins tomorrow, but please feel free to call me on my cell before then with any questions. Remember, come to the race with purpose, with a plan, and be cool relaxed. Contain your nervous energy and control your emotions. Stretch out tonight and eat some carbs. Tomorrow morning, and before the race you should stay away from excessive protein. Since most of the light men race within 90 minutes of Greg's race, I think it would be nice to be there for your teammate and show up a few minutes early so you don't miss his race. If someone wants to voluteer to cox Greg, just let me and him know and you can do it instead of me. If anyone specifically wants me to cox them, just ask via email. If there are more than one requests, I will let you know via email whom I'll be sitting behind. Greg and I will cox the two fastest (to date) light guys, so Greg please plan on sticking around after your race for a little (email if you can't). The light guys will be expected to stick around and cox the girls.

Because you don't have school again tomorrow it is really critical that you are continuing to perform workouts this week. Tomorrow's workout is again 3x8 minutes with 5 minutes rest at 6k -1. Please try to get in this amount of intensity, even if you don't have access to an ergometer. For those of you attending the Main Line Slide, please just be cautious to do not do excercises that you haven't normally been doing. I.E. running or erging is fine. Snow runs, excessive body circuits, or any sort of skiing is not a good option. Not a good idea to have sore muscles for Saturday.

Practice is Cancelled Due to Inclement Weather

Due to Blizzard 2010 #2, practice is cancelled today. It is essential that rowers get in a workout today, with the disruption of our practice schedule due to the cancellation of the Main Line Slide and the empending day off tomorrow, we need to continue to build on all of the hard work we have done so far. Please, get out and do at least 60 minutes of aerobic work today, preferably a run. Remember we have the Main Line Slide this weekend and the boxer trail next weekend so it won't help anyone to sit around today.

Friday, February 5, 2010

Due to the empending snow store the late practice will be moved to 3:15

I appologize for the late notice, however I have just been notified from the school that games and practices have all been moved up. Any student who was in the late group and has a scheduling conflict with the 3:15 may be excused from practice.
